Research: Designing an Interactive Animation with Habit Theories to Promote Toothbrushing
This research project is in collaboration with the University of Illinois Chicago, Pediatric Dental Clinic and Preventing Recurrent Operations Targting Early Childhood Caries Treatment (PROTECT) Program.
Description:
This interactive module is designed for caregivers and young children who experienced severe cavities and general anesthesia surgery in the PROTECT program. The module scaffolds segmented activities aimed at habit building, improving motivation, and developing a toothbrush routine to avoid recurrent cavities.
The module aims to teach oral health and promote toothbrushing that meets the American Dental Association standards, showcasing quality and proper techniques. Multiple theories of learning, self-motiation, and habit formation were investigated and implemented to increase best practices for consistent routine and dental hygiene. Storytelling highlights key components of the habit and learning principles and isolates focus on the different tooth surfaces. The colors, visual, and audio design create a positive, relaxing, and engaging experience for new and recurrent viewers.
